Don’t Forget to Floss and Floss So You Don’t Forget: Evidence Linking Periodontal Disease and Dementias

Maria L. Geisinger, DDS, MS

June 2026 Course - Expires Saturday, June 30th, 2029

Web Only

Abstract

As the aging U.S. population grows and dementia rates rise, dental professionals are increasingly on the front lines of managing the complex oral health needs of older adults—many of whom remain dentate, experience xerostomia inducing medications, and face elevated risks for caries and periodontal disease. This dynamic course explores the powerful links between periodontal disease, the oral microbiome, inflammation, and Alzheimer’s Disease, while equipping clinicians with practical, evidence-based strategies to deliver effective homecare guidance, reduce care-resistant behaviors, and optimize nonsurgical interventions for patients with dementia. Participants will leave with clearer clinical decision-making pathways and actionable protocols to elevate care for one of dentistry’s most vulnerable and rapidly expanding patient populations.
